A wedding weekend is exactly what it sounds like: a multi-day celebration where the couple and their guests gather for a series of events leading up to (and sometimes after) the main wedding day. Instead of a ceremony and reception happening in isolation, guests arrive the day before, or days before, to participate in welcome events, rehearsal dinners, pre-wedding activities, and post-wedding farewells. It's less of a single-day sprint and more of a weekend-long experience.

We've noticed this trend accelerating over the last few years, especially with destination weddings and out-of-town celebrations. Couples are realizing something really beautiful… a wedding weekend gives everyone, especially guests traveling from afar, a chance to actually connect. It's not just "fly in, show up, leave." There's time to settle in, catch up with old friends, make new friends, explore the destination, and really soak up the energy before the big moment. For guests, it's incredible. And for brides it means something we absolutely love to be involved in - the chance to get multiple getting-ready looks!!

Here's why we're obsessed with wedding weekends from a creative standpoint. When a bride only has one getting-ready moment, we nail one look. It's perfect, it's polished, it's everything. But with a wedding weekend? We get to play with range and variety.

One night might call for something bold and editorial. Maybe a more defined eye, a deeper lip, hair styled sleek and modern for a rehearsal dinner vibe. The next morning could shift to something soft and romantic for a welcome brunch, dewy skin, minimal on the eyes, effortless waves. By wedding day, we've had the chance to explore what makes the bride feel most herself across different settings and moods. And if we are styling and curating for a day-after pool party, that’s where we can really play around and have FUN with hair and makeup.

This is honestly one of my favorite things about working with couples planning multi-day celebrations. It's not "one look and we're done." It's a conversation about range. It's asking: "What do you want to feel like at the welcome dinner? What about getting ready with your girls the morning of the ceremony? Do you want to feel bold, romantic, natural, editorial—and how do we shift between those?" The answer is almost always different.

Planning Your Getting-Ready Timeline Across Multiple Events

The practical side of wedding weekends is where communication becomes everything. Here's what we always walk through with couples:

Nail down your events first. Which days have getting-ready moments? If you're having a welcome dinner Thursday night, a rehearsal brunch Friday morning, and the ceremony Saturday afternoon, those are three separate beauty opportunities. Not all of them need full hair and makeup. Some couples do just makeup and keep hair natural, or do their own getting ready for lower-key events. Start with nailing down your schedule.

Decide what needs professional services. This is a conversation we have in phone calls and consultation appointments. Does every event need the full Emily Lynn & Co. team on-site? Maybe the welcome dinner is casual and the bride does her own thing. Maybe the rehearsal is where she wants that bold editorial look we talked about. Maybe she wants us there for the full weekend supporting her and the bridal party through getting ready for every moment. There's no "should", it's completely what feels right for your vision.

Talk about the "in-between" moments. This is the practical stuff nobody thinks about until it's 2 PM and the bride is like, "Wait, do I need a touch-up before the pool party?" We can always plan for light makeup and hair refreshes between events rather than full reapplications. We can advise on which products will last, what'll need a quick refresh, whether a hairstyle can be adjusted (rather than redone) for a second event. We offer on-site touch ups at an hourly rate for our brides who are interested in having their artist stay with them all throughout the day and through photos.

Real Considerations: Weather, Venue, and Guest Expectations

Wedding weekends often happen in destinations. Think Cabo, Carmel, Sedona, a family property in Montecito. And destinations mean variables. That Malibu cliffside rehearsal dinner has ocean breeze. The poolside brunch has direct sun. The evening reception is air-conditioned inside. Each of these affects how makeup holds, how hair behaves, and what looks will actually work across the full experience.

We also think about the vibe shift. A welcome event is usually more casual. Softer looks, more approachable. The rehearsal might be slightly more polished. The ceremony is the moment. And some couples do a farewell brunch the next day where the vibe can be fun and relaxed again. Each one deserves its own energy, and we love working backward from that.

One more thing we always mention: bridesmaid continuity. If the bride is shifting from bold to romantic across weekend events, what about her bridesmaids? Are they getting the same looks throughout, or does everyone get refreshed? Are some of them only getting services for the ceremony day? This affects the overall timeline and budget, but it's worth thinking through. We've had weekends where the bride gets multiple looks but the bridal party stays consistent, and other weekends where everyone gets a beauty moment refresh. Both are beautiful and it just needs to be intentional.

She's laughing, connecting, taking photos, feeling the anticipation build across days instead of peaking all at once. That's the stuff we're so obsessed with. Not just executing beautiful looks, but being part of creating space for the bride to feel seen, feel encouraged, and feel empowered across her entire celebration.
